the haps 1

well really not much has happened since the turn of the new year.. oh well dint quite get into the Honours programme for Pharmacology.. not too disappointed, just opens up more routes.. which is what i have been mulling about for the last few days..

should i do Honours in Biochem or Genetics and then fast-track myself to a pHd?
well the thing is i looked at the third year Biochem and Genetics papers and i think it may be a bit too technical for me..

should i do a BSc in Pharmacology, get my degree and then do a Masters anywhere i want?
maybe.. if Pharmacology is my subject, and well i wouldn't mind doing a Masters, work a bit after that and then do my pHd while working..

can my Honours in Biochem or Genetics allow me to do a Masters in anything else?
well that's what they do all the time..

any older students out there, i would appreciate ur comments.. thanks..

apart from that, have been doing lots of art.. mostly human figures an area which i've been previously weak in.. and a good tip from me for budding artists, is that it's better to have smaller lips and eyes, if ya not doing it proportionately.. i reckon i'm more the emotive, expressive sort of artist..

only trouble is u are susceptible to the elements.. got a crush on this German girl called Nadja who had the most gorgeous long blonde hair..

how's church? well it's still p quiet.. nothing to do with the early 9.00 start for the sole service.. quite a few back already, Mel, Jian, Josh, Justin, Scott, Jared and Kirsten.. oh yeah Lydia and Emma are back too..

Sunday afternoon went to Jian and Mel's neighbour's BBQ.. thought weather would be rubbish coz it kept changing from sun to rain.. it was flippin cold too that wind.. well, the afternoon turned out to be quite fine in fact, so we managed to take Amanda, Jian's neighbour, Mike's cousin around the sight from Dunners.. she was here for the weekend from Brisbane, so it was quite an experience having a BBQ in freezing conditions and no mozzies.. anyway it was supposed to be a group thing but turned out we lost everyone else, so me, Mel, Kat and Helen ended up driving Amanda from Tunnel Beach to Long Beach via Waitati.. that's a long drive..

anyway, few more weeks to Parachute.. good times coming up!

I think you have identified the options and their benefits well. You just need to do some weighting up and see what one suits you best. Like what is it you want to do afterwards? Do you want to keep going and do a PhD, or work, or go overseas or all of those mixed together. Are you ok with the extra year it takes to do a Masters? and sometimes it takes a bit longer. or do you really want to get it done quickly with an Honours, at least with Honours you have a deadline and you will be finished at the end of the year! If you want to get a fuller experience of research I would suggest Masters because that 5th year is a lot different than 4th year you learn a lot more about doing research full time, compared to 4th year where it is part time, along with papers. Honours puts a lot of pressure on you all in that one year, with masters it is not as full on, because you have two years, but then you are expected to achieve more! I am a bit bias towards Masters, that’s why im doing one.

The advantage of Honours is that its faster, It is good if you just want a small bit of research experience. Plus you can start your PhD sooner. Though that may be misleading because I think that the extra experience from a masters will help make starting a PhD a lot easier than going straight form honours.

Then there is the option of doing Honours in something and then doing a one-year masters. Which I know is possible if you have a supervisor that wants you to do a 1 year masters with them. But you would definitely want to check with pharmacology if it is possible, you wouldn’t want to start then find after you honours that you cant.

If you think talking more would help give me a txt and we can make a time. Plus if you can get some other peoples opinions, not just mine, that will help your decision making process e.g. parents, friends, other people in your class, other honours or post grad students, course advisers at uni, god. And hey man don’t worry too much they are all great options anyway J
